Tim Cain, one of the creators of the Fallout series, keeps posting cool videos on his YouTube channel. In the latest one, he answered a fan's question about which narrative aspects of the mentioned series would be worth exploring further.

Cain admitted that he loves stories without clear good and evil, but he also enjoys giving players tough black-and-white choices, where doing evil is a much more rewarding option. For example, Cain presents a situation where we have the opportunity to save an NPC, but if we do, we will irretrievably lose the chance to receive a powerful weapon. According to him, modern games rarely take such situations into account. Instead of doing the right thing, choosing the morally correct option will at best make it harder or delay the acquisition of such weapons.

He would like to further develop this approach if he could make a new Fallout. As he explains:

I would love to dive into Fallout's main theme: power corrupts; people have always done bad things; war never changes. That was always Fallout's main theme. I would love to explore that in detail in a sequel. And really make some of the players who are coming to have fun in this wasteland of cool weapons and weird monsters – give them something to think about while they're playing this game. It's what we always intended, it's why Fallout was so dark and had some of the quests it had.

The chances that the developer will implement these ideas are slim. Fallout is currently a major franchise owned by Bethesda, and Tim Cain has previously stated that he would only return to it if he were given a lot of creative freedom, which currently seems unlikely.
