„We are sad.” CEO's apology didn't particularly help new shooter, fight continues over Splitgate 2 future

SplitGate 2 has yet to regain the trust of players, but for now, studio 1047 Games has laid off a „small group” of employees.

The developers of Splitgate 2 announce layoffs after the release of the full version of their online shooter.

1047 Games' FPS debuted... rather not with a bang. Having almost 26,000 peak Steam users for a free-to-play game is a pretty good result, but it's not enough to compete with the multiplayer giants or make it to the top 100 most popular games on Valve's platform. This was accompanied by moderately positive (or "mixed") reviews from players, only partially due to the controversial appearance of one of the developers at the opening ceremony of the Summer Game Fest 2025.

Nonetheless, we could argue that it was too early to predict the success or failure of Splitgate 2. What happens, however, when the studio is "sadly" forced to lay off some of its employees?

As reported by the company 1047 Games on LinkedIn (via Gamesindustry.biz), the studio "parted ways with a small group of valued team members." No numbers were given, but it was assured that the employer supports affected individuals in finding a new job. It was also reported that co-founders Ian Prolux (yes, the one from SGF and "the cap") and Nicholas Bagian decided not to take a salary.

The developer is preparing for the implementation of the "next phase of the project" and is committed to the long-term development of the second Splitgate. It's not like it's going to please some internet users who sarcastically note that the team calling for "making FPS great again" is actually laying off employees just a week after releasing the full version of their game.

Of course, as some players point out, more than one acclaimed game had a turbulent start and needed time, great effort, and determination from the developers to get back on track (with No Man's Sky leading the way). Nevertheless, for now, SplitGate 2 is far from being a herald of a "great," "excellent," or even "successful" comeback. Let's keep our fingers crossed for 1047 Games and hope that the studio will ultimately follow in the footsteps of Hello Games rather than Firewalk Studios.
