‘We Messed up!’ Admitted Apex Legends’ Devs When Players Lost All Their Progress. Luckily, This Bug Was Quickly Fixed

Some players of the well-liked shooting game Apex Legends may have been in for a surprise when, during one of the recent updates, they lost all their in-game progress. Some people complained online about suddenly losing hundreds of levels, skins, and virtual currency, which they had either spent a significant amount of money on or "worked" for years to acquire.

It's lucky that the sudden account "reset" in Apex Legends was simply caused by an (un)ordinary bug from the devs, and not another large-scale hacker attack. The Respawn Entertainment studio developers quickly grasped the situation and publicly acknowledged their mistake while also informing about the temporary shutdown of the game servers through social media.

We messed up! In order to resolve an account data loss issue, we are temporarily taking the Apex servers offline.

Fear not! We are deploying a fast fix to restore progress and content to affected accounts, but players will not be able to connect to the game during this time. [...] please accept our apologies, and our thanks for your patience!

At the time of writing this news, Apex Legends is up and running again, and the data loss issue was partially resolved thanks to an emergency patch. Developers are still working on a solution that would restore the progress players have made in the last 24 hours.

While the issue will probably be resolved soon in favor of the players, the same question keeps resurfacing in situations like this. When paying real money for virtual content, do we own it, or are we actually just renting it for an indefinite period of time?
