Because X-Men '97 isn’t a reboot, but a sequel to 1992's X-Men: The Animated Series.
In Episode 3, titled Fire Made Flesh, after Storm leaves, a visitor arrives at the X-Men's mansion with a secret that threatens Cyclops and Jean's relationship. It comes to the point that the team will be drawn into a tragic confrontation with an immortal mad scientist.
