World of Warcraft Doubled its Number of Subscribers

Activision Blizzard has published a financial report for the past year. Apart from revenues and profits, we learned that the number of World of Warcraft subscribers has more than doubled.

World of Warcraft Classic has given the a game a second life.
Most important information:
  1. Activision's revenue for 2019: $6.49 billion;
  2. Profit for 2019: $1.6 billion;
  3. 128 million Activision game users per month;
  4. 32 million Blizzard game users per month;
  5. Number of World of Warcraft subscribers has more than doubled.

Activision Blizzard became the next company to publish a financial report with the results for the third quarter of the financial year, i.e. the period from October 1 to December 31 2019. Revenues amounted to 1.99 billion dollars, which is a significant decrease compared to 2.38 billion in the same three months in 2018, although it still managed to outperform internal forecasts by 100 million dollars.

The profit was $454 million. In contrast, the company's revenues for the whole of 2019 amounted to 6.49 billion dollars, of which 4.93 billion came from digital sources and 3.36 billion from microtransactions alone. The whole year's profit was $1.6 billion.

All these figures are mainly interesting to accountants and investors. We are more interested in facts about games, and a lot of these are included in Activision Blizzard's report. We found out that 32 million people a month play Blizzard Entertainment's games. At the end of the year, World of Warcraft had more than twice as many subscribers as in mid-2019. This is largely due to the August premiere of WoW Classic.

In October Overwatch hit Nintendo Switch. As a result, the number of people who have played this title since its launch has exceeded 50 million. The company also boasted that the popularity and income from the card game Hearthstone increased, which was made possible by the release of Descent of Dragons and the Battlegrounds mode. However, no specific numbers were shared.

In total, all Activision games are played by 128 million people every month. This is largely due to the success of Call of Duty: Mobile, which has been installed over 150 million times since its October launch.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has also done very well. The sales of the game were clearly higher than in the case of Black Ops 4, although no specific numbers were given. The only thing that was revealed was that on PC the latest release is selling 50% faster than BO4.
