An independent Australian development studio based in Adelaide. Team Cherry develops and publishes games for PC and consoles, and gained worldwide recognition thanks to the Hollow Knight series.

Team Cherry's story

The studio's origins trace back to 2013, when developers Ari Gibson and William Pellen took part in the Ludum Dare 2013 game jam. Their project, Hungry Knight - where players controlled the title character as he hunted and ate worms - didn't receive much positive attention. However, recognizing that the character had promise, the developers chose to build their next project around him.

The developers began working on a metroidvania inspired, among other things, by the Legend of Zelda and Dark Souls series. In the meantime, in 2014, the creators chose to formally establish their presence in the industry and founded Team Cherry, setting up the studio in Adelaide.

Hollow Knight, the first great success

Hollow Knight, as they called their debut game, achieved its first success even before it launched. The creators managed to raise over 57,000 Australian dollars on Kickstarter, even though their initial goal was just 35,000.

The game debuted on PC in 2017, and a year later, it was released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Hollow Knight quickly became hugely popular, achieving strong sales and receiving high praise from both players and industry critics. On Steam, the title was rated "overwhelmingly positive", while on Metacritic it averaged scores of 87-90/100, varying by platform.

Hollow Knight: Silksong, a sequel that was highly acclaimed

Seizing the moment, in 2017 Team Cherry announced a sequel to their hit, titled Hollow Knight: Silksong. However, its release was still far off, as the game didn't arrive on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 until September 2025. The game initially gained huge popularity.
