Beautiful, Unusual Games with Unique Graphics

"Playability matters, not graphics" is often the justification for poor visuals. Graphics, however, can be much more than beautiful or ugly. It can also be ingenious, intriguing, and unusual, and these are the examples of the most unique games.

The French seem to have a unique talent for touching and unique games about World War I. In addition to the wonderful, slightly perversely cartoonish Valiant Hearts, 2018 features an even more visually unique 11-11: Memories Retold. It's the story of two men from hostile factions who go to the front for completely different reasons. In terms of the gameplay, it may not be a very engaging game as there are mostly conversations with NPCs and simple interactions with the game world. As you might guess, however, it is the plot and our characters who play the main roles in this extraordinary and poignant tale.

What about the ingenious visuals? The authors used a style that resembles an oil painting. The characters and their surroundings are painted with brush strokes. The screen is full of vibrant, warm colors, which at the same time creates a specific atmosphere and contrasts slightly with the gloomy theme. We have seen a similar thing in one of the quests (a Brush with Death) in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, but combining this with the trenches of World War I gives a slightly more pronounced effect. And for dessert, there's a great voice acting, with Elijah Wood's performance in the lead!
