Porting complex PC hits to mobile isn't easy. Very few studios undertake such a task, and even more rarely does anything good come out of it. Company of Heroes defies that trend.

The game was released on PC in 2006, and yet to this day it remains one of the best RTSs, with the quality of execution beating most mobile strategies. The authors brought this timeless classic to Android directly, without any simplifications. We get a tactically complex production, in which the use of environmental elements and control of the battlefield is crucial.

In a way, Company of Heroes was a good candidate for a mobile conversion, since we command entire squads rather than individual soldiers. Still, working out the controls to fit touch screens was not easy a task, but Feral Interactive studio did a great job. The authors have introduced many improvements that benefit the game, such as the ability to activate enlarged icons or enable minimap and icon transparency. I'm not going to pull the wool over your eyes and try to convince you that everything works just as well as it does on PC, but with a little practice, you can easily play and focus on commanding, instead of fighting with the interface.

The mobile Company of Heroes doesn't have multiplayer, unfortunately. You can only play two campaigns and a skirmish mode with solo skirmishes against the AI. But the single-player content is rich and the fun can be extended by purchasing the Opposing Fronts expansion. The second expansion, Tales of Valor, is also expected to get a mobile version soon.

Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower

Last year, Perchang released Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower, the third installment in its most popular series.

It's a tactical, turn-based game with a pinch of RPG elements. The player commands a team of heroes exploring a huge tower, full of monsters and traps. The action here is shown from top-down, and the heart of the gameplay is an extensive, turn-based battle system.

This game features a fairly high level of difficulty. Well-developed characters aren't enough. Without properly deploying them on the map and taking advantage of their abilities, no team of daredevils will be able to overcome the challenges. Varied objectives of battles provide an additional attraction. Defeating all enemies is not always mandatory. Oftentimes, you also have to destroy a specific object or just get out alive, for example.

Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower is the best and biggest installment of the series. The game enjoys exquisite level of polish, and it feels like someone designed it from scratch specifically with mobile devices in mind. The gameplay has enormous depth, but we play in short segments. The title is expansive enough to provide several dozen hours of fun, but it works just as well for short, bite-sized sessions.
