Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Nintendo, 2023

  1. Release date: October 20
  2. Platform: Nintendo Switch
  3. Our rating: 9/10

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is great proof that good ideas never get old, no matter how simple they are. The new game with the mustachioed plumber and his team proves that simple side-scrolling and jumping can still be incredibly engaging and playable. This production doesn't need an intriguing plot and compelling performances. We've always known that Mario must save everyone from the evil Bowser – but this time instead of Princess Peach, the entire Flower Kingdom needs saving.

This title is essentially the first two-dimensional Mario platformer for the Nintendo console since 2012. And although there's certainly no talk of a graphic revolution here, you can see progress and a certain freshness. The creators have prepared a multitude of brilliantly designed, fabulously colorful levels, full of ingenious challenges, and they've managed to add a bit of creativity to the well-known formula. Among all these 3D open-world action games, the "clichéd" formula of Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a breath of fresh air, offering the same type of fun games once had.

Paired with the inventiveness of its level design, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a smorgasbord of fun and whimsy that keeps you happy and entertained no matter how old you are.
