Obscure Sci-Fi Games You May Not Have Heard Of (And That's a Shame)

Cyberpunk 2077, Mass Effect, Fallen Order – these are games that almost anyone knows at least by reputation. But even if you're not a fan of the genre, some of the more obscure SF productions may steal your heart (and a few evenings).

Primordia

  1. Genre: point'n'click adventure game
  2. Release year: 2012
  3. The best thing about it: the original concept

Sci-fi games have developed many clichés, like contemplating a future where the world is ruled by artificial intelligence, wars with androids, or trying to find out who's a replicant. Sometimes it may turn out the protagonist themselves is one. However, we almost always observe all this from the human perspective. Or at least someone who thinks they are human. Primordia shows us that an interesting story can also be told in a completely different way.

The main characters of the Wormwood Studio's adventure game are robots. Horatio and Crispin discover a multi-layered plot by chance. During their adventures, they come across remarkable independent characters and visit beautiful steampunk locations. In the meantime, they try to answer the question of whether they were created by man or whether they should consider the myth about the existence of humans just another fairy tale.

There is no shortage of humor in the game, and solving the difficult puzzles (especially towards the end) is motivated by the frequent breaking of the fourth wall by the creators of the fourth wall and offering many easter eggs. Interestingly, although the game can easily be classified as a classic adventure game, Wormwood has prepared several different endings. Including at least one that can surprise even the most experienced players.

A completely different perspective of dystopian future (also posing difficult questions about the nature of humanity) is shown in Inside, by the creators of the cult-classic Limbo. Although the game, unlike Primordia, lacks humor and pop-culture references, it could safely be described as an interactive piece of art. So why didn't I give me more space to Inside here? Mostly because the game is quite recognizable. However, if by some miracle you have not played it, be sure to do it. Or at least check out the gameplays on YouTube. It's worth it!
