Small and Indie RPGs Coming in 2022 You're Not Hyped About, But You Should

While there will be no shortage of big RPGs in 2022, there are also at least a dozen lesser-known indie games on the cards. If they don't fail on the technological side of things, they may succeed with their pure radness and originality.

Wigmund: The Return of the Hidden Knights

  1. Developer: The Scholastics
  2. Release date: 2022

It's a game so obscure that even after nearly 11 months of Early Access, it still doesn't get much attention. That's a shame, actually. The atmosphere of Celtic interiors and undergrounds oozes from each, gold-red frame. The character models could probably use more refinement, but considering the really small budget of this production, it's not that bad.

The combat system seems interesting. The subsequent attacks must be... drawn on the screen, same fore dodges. It gives you a much greater feeling of immersion in battles than most of traditional RPGs. And it requires a lot of dexterity.

The Scholastics team did not stop at this novelty.In Wigmund: The Return of the Hidden Knights, we learn the story in three ways – through a game, a movie and a book. This allows the creators to juggle between storytelling approaches, sometimes leaving more room for imagination, and other times carefully designing what the player is supposed to see. And if we spice it all up with Tolkien inspirations... Maybe Wigmund was not very loud in Early Access, but when we finally get the real thing, there's no way it won't become one of the most atmospheric niche RPGs of the year.

It's worth the wait because:

  1. creative narrative;
  2. drawing attacks and dodges.
