Playerunknown s Battlegrounds may have inticed the fad for battle royale, but it is Fortnite and Epic Games that took full advantage of it, forging their game into an unquestionable king of the genre. "By chance," since it was originally designed as a very different game – the heart of the fun was originally a mode similar to the Horde, called "Saving the world," and the Battle Royale mode was added later, when the original premises did not win the enthusiasm of the players. On the other hand, players – especially younger ones – went totally crazy for the "free for all, till the last man" gameplay model.
Oddly enough, Fortnite is not impressive compared to other titles in the ranking as for the number of players, and for the phenomenon it's become. As of May 2020, the game had 350 million registered users, a far more modest figure than PUBG, not to mention other Asian market hits.
The percentage of active players, in turn, is truly impressive. In August 2018, 78.3 million active users were registered per month, and in December 2020 there was a record of concurrent players – as many as 15.3 million. The game remains extremely popular to this day. Well over 200 million players compete in it every month.
SUDDENLY, THE COMPETITION STRIKES
Call of Duty is available as a traditional game with a story campaign and a multiplayer mode, but we can also play in the free Warzone mode, which is a battle royale game. In December 2020, 85 million players were registered in the game. This is still significantly less than Fortnite, but the result is still worthy of an acknowledgement.
