14 Best-Selling RPGs - The Most Popular Role-Playing Games in 2022

There are many ways to measure popularity. Here, we've compiled a list of best-selling role-playing games, which have sold the most copies throughout their entire lifespan.

Table of Contents

Final Fantasy VII

Developer: Square

Year of release: 1997

Estimated number of copies sold: 13.45 million

NOTES

The result of nearly 13,5 million copies is mainly due to numerous ports. The game was originally released on the first PlayStation and later arrived on PC, PS3, PS4, PSP, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. Final Fantasy VII Remake sales are not included.

Square Soft studio seems to be in possession of the perfect recipe for an all-time RPG classic, FFVII being their third game on this list. The seventh installment in the Final Fantasy series first released in 1997 on a disc for the PlayStation console, and immediately drew players into its virtual world. It was the first FF to feature real 3D graphics and cutscenes, giving the CD a run for its money. The story of Cloud Strife and an organization of eco-terrorists opposing a greedy corporation exploiting the planet's resources was already engrossing back in the day, and its message seems even more relevant today.

Final Fantasy VII is considered one of the most outstanding games in the history of the industry – a production that had a huge impact on many later games. It's even credited with unprecedentedly boosting the sales of PlayStation itself and popularizing gaming worldwide. The only thing that didn't work back then was the English language version, as well as the first edition's performance on PC. Today, we enjoy FFVII in a much nicer remake, but it's worth bearing in mind that it's not quite the same game.
