CloverPit is a three-dimensional strategy game that combines mechanics known from Balatro with the aesthetics of an escape room and a psychological horror. The production offers gameplay based on challenges, collecting charms, and synergy between items, all maintained in a psychedelic, unsettling atmosphere. It was produced by the independent Italian studio Panik Arcade.

Gameplay

The gameplay in CloverPit is based on the mechanics of a one-armed bandit, which is the central point of the entire game. We buy spins, start the machine and use the received funds to pay off the constantly growing debt.

The key role here is played by a system of over 150 items and charms, which affect the probability of winnings, the value of payouts, and create extensive synergies. Thanks to this, the gameplay takes on a strategic character, and the right combinations allow for the creation of powerful connections.

Rectify Gaming: 8.5 / 10 by Will "FncWill" Hogeweide

In a year packed with clever roguelites, CloverPit still manages to stand out by being uncomfortably human. It’s a mirror held up to our own compulsions, our own need to pull one more lever, to see if maybe this time, luck is on our side. For Mac players, that’s especially true—they’ve had to live that metaphor just to get through the title screen.

It’s not for everyone, but if you’re the kind of player who enjoys digging into systems and mastering the chaos, CloverPit will have you hooked. However, just like a real casino, remember the house always wins. This house will just kill you when you lose.

ZdobywcyGier.eu: 8.5 / 10 by Bartosz Michalik

CloverPit is an exceptionally interesting title. On the one hand, it offers a lot of content, solid replayability, and can be much more addictive than we might expect. On the other hand, no matter how hard we try to strategize, the gameplay is practically always the same, which makes it terribly tedious and repetitive at times. Still, it's hard to put down. CloverPit has something about it that constantly encourages you to keep coming back and trying again.

The main pros of the game

  • Addictive Gameplay: Many users found CloverPit to be highly addictive, similar to other games in the genre like Balatro and Buckshot Roulette. The mechanics of gambling and the thrill of hitting jackpots provide a satisfying experience.
  • Unique Aesthetic: The game features a charming low-poly, PS1-style graphics and a dark atmosphere that resonates well with players. The sound design enhances the overall experience, contributing to the game's immersive qualities.
  • Variety of Items and Synergies: With over 150 items, players appreciate the potential for different builds and strategies, even if some items are deemed less useful.
  • Engaging Concept: The debt loop mechanic and the challenge of managing resources while gambling for survival is intriguing and adds depth to the gameplay.
  • Value for Money: Many reviewers noted that the game is reasonably priced for the amount of content it offers, especially considering its addictive nature.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Gameplay: A significant number of players expressed that the game becomes repetitive after a few runs, with many runs feeling similar and lacking sufficient variety in strategies.
  • Balancing Issues: Users reported that some items are overpowered while others are nearly useless, leading to a bloated item pool that dilutes the effectiveness of builds. The RNG (random number generation) can also feel punishing, with players experiencing runs that are doomed due to bad luck.
  • Lack of Replayability: Many reviews indicated that once players beat the game, they felt little incentive to continue playing. The absence of compelling endgame content or variety in challenges was a common complaint.
  • Long Animations: The unskippable animations during spins and other actions were noted as frustrating, especially during longer runs where players wanted to speed through repetitive tasks.
  • Difficulty Curve: Some players found the game too easy or felt that the early game was heavily reliant on luck rather than skill, which can lead to dissatisfaction.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Increased Gameplay Variety: Many users requested more diverse gameplay mechanics and strategies, such as different buffs or interactions that could enhance the slot machine mechanics.
  • Faster Slot Machine Speed: An option to increase the speed of the slot machine was frequently mentioned, as players found the pacing too slow during repetitive spins.
  • More Unlockables and Customization: Players desired additional unlockable content, such as cosmetic items or more engaging memory cards that could provide unique challenges without being consumable.
  • Improved Item Balance: A call for a rework of the item system to ensure that all items have viable uses and that the gameplay does not devolve into a few dominant strategies.
  • Expanded Endgame Content: Users expressed a desire for more substantial endgame challenges or goals to pursue after completing the main objectives, as many felt the game lost its appeal after reaching the credits.

Summary

  • Overall, while CloverPit has garnered praise for its addictive gameplay and unique aesthetic, it faces criticism regarding balance, replayability, and the need for more diverse mechanics and content.
