Wccftech: 7.5 / 10 by Nathan Birch

Curse of the Dead Gods is a fun, polished, and mechanically-sound roguelike with a few smart twists. Unfortunately, a lack of personality and variety means it's also a game that gets less interesting the longer you play it. Hardcore roguelike fans will enjoy their time with these Dead Gods, but less dedicated players may find themselves praying for relief.

GamingTrend: 85 / 100 by Ben Lombardo

Curse of the Dead Gods is fantastic. The gameplay, while incredibly challenging, is still fun and immensely rewarding. It's so satisfying to finally complete a dungeon after spending hours grinding there. It's a roguelite in nearly the best sense of the word, with the only downside being that there's no established story; no tangible endgame.

DarkZero: 8 / 10 by Ian Howarth

Still, even without every fresh touch making it's mark on the genre or not quite living up to the high-difficulty level that many people boast the game has, I found it to be a great time.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Combat: Players praise the combat mechanics for being smooth, responsive, and satisfying, with a high skill ceiling that rewards mastery.
  • Unique Curse System: The curse mechanic adds depth to gameplay, allowing players to balance risk and reward, as some curses can be beneficial depending on the player's strategy.
  • Atmospheric Art Style: The game's dark, gritty visuals and thematic design are well-received, enhancing the overall experience.
  • Weapon Variety: There is a diverse selection of weapons, each allowing different playstyles and strategies, which keeps gameplay fresh.
  • Replay Value: The game's procedural generation and the curse system ensure that no two runs are the same, maintaining player interest over time.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Gameplay: Many players note that the game can become repetitive after a while, especially due to the recycling of enemy types and bosses across different runs.
  • RNG Dependence: The randomness in weapon drops and upgrades can lead to frustrating runs, where players feel at the mercy of luck rather than skill.
  • Lack of Narrative: The absence of a deeper story or character interactions makes the game feel hollow to some, as it focuses more on gameplay than on narrative depth.
  • Difficulty Spikes: Some players find the difficulty to be punishing, particularly in later stages, which can feel unfair and lead to frustration.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Enemy and Boss Variety: Players expressed a desire for a greater diversity of enemies and bosses to enhance the experience and reduce repetition.
  • Improved Progression System: Some users suggested that the meta-progression could be more meaningful, with better rewards for completing runs and unlocking new content.
  • Ability to Choose Curses: A common request is for players to have the option to select from a set of curses rather than facing random ones, allowing for more strategic gameplay.
  • Additional Content: Some players wish for more late-game content, including extra weapons, relics, and challenges to keep the game engaging beyond the initial playthrough.

Summary

  • Overall, "Curse of the Dead Gods" is recognized as a solid roguelike with engaging mechanics and a unique atmosphere, although it faces criticism for its repetitiveness and reliance on RNG.
