The first expansion for the 2016 dungeon crawler RPG Darkest Dungeon by Red Hook Studios. The add-on utilizes the gameplay mechanics from the core game — you complete a team of heroes and set out to explore the eponymous Darkest Dungeon. Your goal is to find enormous riches, with which you can expand a shabby hamlet, also serving as your base.

Darkest Dungeon: The Crimson Court utilizes the gameplay mechanics from the core game. You gather a party of heroes, who set out to explore the eponymous Darkest Dungeon in search for riches, which you use to expand the shabby town serving as your base. In contrast to characters in similar games, the protagonists suffer from typical human ailments. Some of them may go berserk, while others are afraid of blood or may panic when surrounded by darkness.
The game places a heavy emphasis on blood — it is a theme connecting not only the items you find, but also your enemies, of which you can find new kinds in the expansion. The Crimson Court also introduces vampires, with their own unique set of abilities.
Darkest Dungeon: The Crimson Court for PC, iOS and etc. is based on the technology created for the core game. The expansion features expressive hand-drawn visuals and an atmospheric soundtrack, as well as a narrator, who constantly comments on your actions.

The Crimson Court's new mechanics are fantastic additions to Darkest Dungeon, and they've definitely helped to keep things fresh with all these new twists and developments. While I do love how seamlessly the new content has been integrated into the game, it might need a bit of balancing before it becomes truly fun and engaging to play.

The Crimson Court pumps Darkest Dungeon full of disturbing blood-sucking enemies, a challenging new class, and a marathon-style new area that forces you to think differently about how to sustain your team over a long run. While there's definitely enough new content in The Crimson Court to come back to Darkest Dungeon for, it's more the kind of DLC that mixes things up for a new replay than an essential upgrade you should install from the beginning.

If you’re the kind of person that complains about games being hard, or unfair in their mechanics, then Darkest Dungeon probably isn’t for you. It’s in that same vein that, if you played the original game and thought that it was too difficult, The Crimson Court expansion probably isn’t for you either. In combination with the base game, it can make progression exceedingly hard, if not outright impossible for some. As end-game content, the process of completing it can become a grind, which takes away from the tension Darkest Dungeon carries so well with its initial design. The expansion isn’t all bad, with the additional content and mechanics themselves being interesting and unique additions to the game. Red Hook is actively updating the expansion content based on player feedback, and have been since its release. Hopefully, in the future, it will be much more balanced and live up to its potential. Right now, however, it’s just kind of a slog through Darkest Dungeon’s oppressive love taps.
