In 2021, former Blizzard Entertainment employees founded their own development studio. Moonbeast Productions, based in Austin, Texas, kept us waiting a long time for its debut project. At the end of January 2026, however, the developers revealed their hitherto hidden cards and announced Darkhaven, an action RPG from the hack'n'slash subgenre, throwing down the gauntlet to the Diablo and Path of Exile series.
The work in question was overseen by such veterans as Erich Schaefer and Brian Fitzgerald(Diablo,?DiabloII), Peter Hu, Phil Shenk, Anthony Rivero(DiabloII), Colin Day(DiabloIII) and Eric McNine(DiabloIV).
In Darkhaven, the action is viewed from a bird's eye view. Although most of the locations through which the adventure leads us are procedurally generated, important places have been made manually; at the same time, permanent worlds have been prepared for the purposes of online gameplay. The developers made sure that the places we visit connect with each other in a natural way; efforts were made to avoid a structure of rooms connected by corridors.
In addition, the title offers a lot of freedom in terms of movement, allowing us to, among other things, climb on objects, swim and jump. We use these abilities both during exploration and on the battlefield, giving us a tactical advantage over enemies.
While traversing the game world, we are primarily engaged in fighting enemies. Dynamic skirmishes, during which adversaries often outnumber us (and adjust to our behavior on the fly), force us not only to be in constant motion, but also to make strategic decisions.
As a result of our actions, the environment is destroyed, which you can use to your advantage. Among other things, the game allows you to drain lakes, change the course of lava rivers, and dig through underground walls. We can also modify the terrain in the other direction, creating islands and fortifications, and even erecting settlements and bridge-like crossings.
Adversaries, on the other hand, have similar possibilities. This is especially true of powerful emissaries of darkness, whose invasions can drastically change the landscape in the areas where they have been prowling.
As you progress, you develop your character by improving your skills and gathering more powerful equipment. The system implemented in the game makes sure that the equipment that gets into our hands is adequate to the level we have reached. Occasionally we can find a rare, even "too good" item, which will be useful longer than common equipment.
Completing the whole are relics, runes and runic words, with the help of which we can increase the combat potential of the character and adapt it to the individual style of play.
Darkhaven takes us to a dark, devastated fantasy world devoid of civilization. In the course of the gameplay, we take on the role of a survivor who leaves his fortress to hunt the monsters that reign over the wild lands.
Darkhaven allows you to play alone or in multiplayer mode over the Internet. The title offers the possibility of cooperation with other players (PvE) and competition (PvP). Trade plays an important role here; we can sell the collected items to the other participants of the game.
Darkhaven was developed from the beginning with modification authors in mind. The developers prepared a special editor that allows players to create their own content, such as items, monsters, character classes and quests. We can do all this in real time, during multiplayer gameplay.
