Echoes of the End is an action adventure game set in a fantasy world. It was developed by Myrkur Games studio from Reykjavik and it is their debut project.

Gameplay

In Echoes of the End we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP).

Game world and adventure

The adventure leads us through various locations inspired by Iceland's landscapes, among which we will find wastelands overgrown with moss, snow-covered mountain peaks, and also lava lakes. While exploring these places, we carry out missions and push the plot forward, solve environmental puzzles and face skill challenges, as well as fight enemies.

Fencing and magical powers

The main character is a seasoned fencer, but her skills do not end with swordsmanship. The protagonist has been endowed with magical powers, which provides her with the ability of telekinesis and the use of invisible paths. Ryn uses these capabilities both to manipulate the environment and unlock new areas, as well as on the battlefield.

Combat and opponents

During dynamic skirmishes, we block attacks, perform dodges and launch swift counterattacks, but also lift opponents and forcefully throw them onto the ground. We have to deal with hostile people and also fantasy creatures. Among the latter, powerful bosses are leading the way.

I won’t say that there aren’t some impressive features in Echoes of the End, namely the impressive visuals and the occasionally smart puzzle, but not a single thing in it felt original. It’s a clear case of a smaller team wanting to create an experience akin to a AAA title, but including all of the clichés and annoying technical trickeries that used to infest big-budgeted titles from the PS4 era.

When everything runs as it should, Echoes of the End is visually pleasing, but the actual gameplay and animations are lacking.

Impulsegamer: 4.1 / 5 by Chris O'Connor

Echoes Of The End does have a lot of good points. Visually it does not disappoint, the magic can be fun to wield, and the puzzles add a nice little change of pace. The combat is generally enjoyable enough, if a little awkward, especially targeting magic abilities with camera angles in the midst of battle. If you can put up with its little quirks and occasional glitches (I once seemed to manage to get myself stuck inside the landscape and was unable to move or even see the world properly), it does offer a nice little bit of fantasy storytelling and might be worth your while. If you are easily frustrated by games that sometimes seem to work against you, maybe give it a miss.
