A role-playing game inspired by "paper" RPGs and by Disco Elysium. In Esoteric Ebb, we enter an "arcanepunk" fantasy world and assume the role of a Cleric. The protagonist seeks to uncover the greatest secret of a city inhabited by devils and sphinxes.
Released in 2019 (initially for PCs and later for other platforms), Disco Elysium is a unique production whose "magic" other developers occasionally try to capture and incorporate into their projects. One of the productions inspired by it (as well as by tabletop role-playing games) is an RPG titled Esoteric Ebb, created by an independent developer Christoffer Bodegard.
In Esoteric Ebb events are viewed from an isometric perspective.
During the game, we take on the role of a Cleric, and although we start our adventure in the Mortuary, the entire city of Norvik is open to us. As we explore it, we meet its inhabitants, among whom the representatives of the factions that control the city take the lead. To fulfill our duties, we must skillfully navigate between these factions and, if it benefits us, try to play them against each other. Along our journey, we encounter various NPCs, including devils, drunken sphinxes, and other fantasy-themed creatures.
While completing tasks, we make decisions that impact the further course of the story. The success of our actions is determined by dice rolls, and a potential failure does not necessarily mean the end of the adventure, as failures open up entirely new (often more interesting) paths for us.
As we progress, we unlock our Cleric's powers, which expand our range of possibilities and provide us with access to unique storyline options. Among them, we can find the ability to control minds, uncover secrets, or communicate with the deceased. Turn-based fights with opponents also appear here (being a last resort, but nevertheless present in this game).
In addition, an important role is played by the character statistics, which are linked to the mechanics of conducting internal debates in the protagonist's mind. They provide us with different points of view and help (or quite the opposite) in making decisions about which direction to push the plot.
The so-called Questing Tree also proves to be useful - it is a combination of a journal, skill tree, and mind map, through which we develop the storyline and the main character.
In Esoteric Ebb we enter a "post-arcanepunk" world inhabited by creatures from myths, legends, and stories, specifically to the city of Norvik, where elections were to be held for the first time. Five days before this historic event, a tea house in the very center of Norvik explodes. The main character of the game is assigned with solving the case, finding the culprits, and restoring order.
The graphic design of Esoteric Ebb is maintained in a cartoon style.
In this game, you can be a heroic Cleric, a total disaster, or somehow both at once. Esoteric Ebb is packed with weird possibilities, and soon we’ll get to try them all.

Game Ratings for Esoteric Ebb Video Game.
VDGMS: 9 / 10 by Darren Andrew
Labeling yourself as a Disco-like is a bold move and following the blueprint this closely is even bolder, as this will surely draw comparisons to what many consider to be one of the greatest CRPG’s of all time. Luckily, Esoteric Ebb can withstand the scrutiny and pressure of the comparison because it’s not a carbon copy and there is a clear line of distinction between the two experiences. It might be a little inconsistent and clunky at times, but with a high level of autonomy, witty writing and satirical tone that balances the heavy themes within, Esoteric Ebb is a dungeon worth plundering.
PC Gamer: 90 / 100 by Ted Litchfield
If you like RPGs, you owe it to yourself to play Esoteric Ebb.
Console Creatures: 9 / 10 by Matt Sowinski
Esoteric Ebb is incredible. Saturated with fantastic writing and memorable characters, its systems blend CRPG and TTRPG in clever ways.
