A strategy with RPG elements from 1993, based on the Dungeons & Dragons license and developed by Silicon Knights. In Fantasy Empires we create our character and begin conquering the fantasy land of Mystara. We expand our sphere of influence through fire and sword, or by relying on diplomacy.
Silicon Knights is a known development studio in the gaming industry. It has inscribed itself in golden letters in the pages of video game history by creating Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. One of the earlier projects of this studio was a strategy game with RPG elements titled Fantasy Empires.
Fantasy Empires was based on the Dungeons & Dragons license.
We start the adventure by creating a character who, although cannot fight on their own, participates in missions and leads the army to victory, conquering successive provinces of the fantasy world of Mystara.
On the strategic map, we deal with constructing buildings and improving the existing ones, recruiting soldiers, as well as making invasions on neutral territories and areas belonging to our opponents. Apart from humans, we can command orcs, dwarves, elves, or even halflings.
Battles take place in real time on special tactical maps, where we view our units in a top-down view. One of the game's distinctive features is the reliance on artificial intelligence based on neural networks, which at the time of its premiere (1993) was an unprecedented innovation.
Interestingly, we can also expand our sphere of influence here without shedding blood. The game allows us to form alliances, which we can break at any time. When choosing the latter, however, we must be cautious, as a lawful or neutral character may then change its nature to chaotic.
