Most strategy games have accustomed us to the idea that meeting the growing needs of our domains, as well as their development, primarily involves extracting increasing amounts of natural resources. Generation Exile described here, which is a turn-based strategy with city-building elements, is based on different principles.

The game is set in a solarpunk theme and was created by the independent team Sonderlust Studios, led by Nels Anderson (co-creator of Firewatch) and Karla Zimonja (co-author of Gone Home). It forces us to use a limited supply of resources and recycle everything that can be repurposed.

Gameplay

In Generation Exile we take command of a "generation ship" traveling through space in search of a new home for humanity. During the journey, which lasts several decades, we must ensure the survival of the inhabitants by meeting their needs and taking care of the maintenance, reconstruction, and enhancement of the ship's ecosystems.

Limited resources

This is not simple, as we have a limited amount of resources. The ship operates on a circular economy, where we use biological waste to produce new resources and material waste to create new technologies, tools, and structures. Additionally, if a particular object is inefficient, we can dispose of it, thus recovering resources to build a new, better structure in its place.

The ship's crew

The key to success is building a city on the ship's deck in such a way that its individual elements complement each other. However, that's not the end, as our crew also plays an equally important role.
