Grit and Valor: 1949 is a real-time strategy (RTS) with elements borrowed from the roguelike and tower defense genres. The game is set in a dieselpunk style and presents its own vision of World War 2, in which combat mechs dominate the battlefield. It was developed by the British company Milky Tea Studios, known for their work on the racing game Coffin Dodgers.

Plot

The game takes us to an alternative version of 1949, in which World War II is still ongoing. The Axis forces, with the core in the form of mechs, control Europe. Decimated units of the Allies are forced to retreat, but they do not lay down their arms and instead establish a resistance movement.

The fate of the conflict depends on the pilots at the controls of the captured machines - their task is to get to New Germany and blow up the enemy's main communications center using an electromagnetic charge.

TheGamer: 4 / 5 by Matt Arnold

Grit & Valor is, in many ways, exactly what I look for in a roguelike - individual runs aren’t too long, so it’s easy to squeeze in a game or two when time is tight, but there’s plenty of incentive for multi-run marathons as well.

Final Weapon: 3.5 / 5 by Nick Erl

Grit & Valor - 1949 is not a game that relies on radical innovation, but it doesn't have to. It proves that sometimes it's enough to combine familiar mechanics with a clear concept and a lot of playful subtlety to create something good and enjoyable. Mech unlocks and limited enemy variety can be straining, but this is still a worthwhile experience.

Shacknews: 6 / 10 by Josh Broadwell

Putting aside the weird, tone-deaf childishness of the plot setup, Grit and Valor – 1949 is occasionally an exciting little strategy game. Some of its map designs and optional objectives force you to make the most of scant resources, and for all the challenge, it's refreshingly quick and easy to make up losses when you fail. It's just frustratingly shallow in its take on roguelike structures for longer than it should be.
