Mortal Shell is a debut project of Cold Symmetry studio. This is a soulslike game, or action RPG in the style of the Dark Souls series. The game began in 2018 under the name Dungeonhaven as a project of three developers who worked on, among others, the Call of Duty series and Ghost of Tsushima.

Plot

Mortal Shell action is set in a fantasy universe. However, this is not a colourful land of elves or dwarves, but a dark world world filled with horror, where only ruins and fragile memories remain of human civilisation. The mysterious existence known as the Dark Father does not like it. He is the one who gives orders to the main character - an empty vessel without form - to go in search of the lost shrines of the faithful, where he will have to cope with enormous challenges.

The best Dark Souls clone so far features a number of interesting new ideas and also offers an experience that is easier to acclimatise to for new players.

Inverse: 9 / 10 by Corey Plante

Mortal Shell might be the best Dark Souls game ever, despite not having any official affiliation with the franchise. What this small team does with a short playtime is nothing short of astounding.

TheSixthAxis: 8 / 10 by Jason Coles

Mortal Shell is just an incredibly satisfying experience. It'll punish you constantly, but if you can master the mechanics it lays out in front of you then you'll have an incredible time of things. The lore is a little more obvious that in other soulslikes, and the story it tells and the world it puts you in are both rather enthralling. This is definitely a game that fans of dying a lot will enjoy, but it's probably not for everyone.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Visuals: The game is praised for its dark, immersive atmosphere and visually striking environments, which enhance the overall experience.
  • Unique Shell Mechanic: Players appreciate the innovative "Shell" system, which allows for different playstyles by switching between various characters with unique stats and abilities.
  • Combat Mechanics: Many reviews highlight the weighty and impactful feel of combat, with some enjoying the "Harden" mechanic that allows players to block attacks.
  • Challenging Gameplay: The game is acknowledged for its difficulty, which can be rewarding for players who enjoy a challenge.
  • Familiarity System: The mechanic of learning item effects through use is seen as a clever addition, promoting exploration and experimentation.

The main cons of the game

  • Combat Frustrations: Several users express frustration with the combat system, noting that dodging can feel unreliable and that the parry mechanic is inconsistent and sometimes unresponsive.
  • Limited Enemy Variety: Many players feel that the game suffers from a lack of diverse enemy types, leading to repetitive encounters.
  • Level Design Issues: The map design is often criticized for being confusing and maze-like, making navigation frustrating. Some players find the areas feel copy-pasted and lacking in distinctiveness.
  • Healing System: The scarcity of healing items and the reliance on collecting mushrooms for health restoration are seen as tedious and punishing.
  • Short Length: While some appreciate the compact experience, others feel it leaves players wanting more in terms of content and depth.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Fast Travel: Players express a desire for a more robust fast travel system, as the current mechanics can lead to tedious backtracking.
  • More Weapons and Customization: Users want a greater variety of weapons and deeper customization options for character builds, as the current selection feels limited.
  • Improved Enemy AI and Variety: There is a call for better enemy design and AI to enhance combat encounters and provide a more dynamic experience.
  • Better Checkpoints: Players suggest that more frequent and strategically placed checkpoints would improve the flow of the game and reduce frustration after dying.
  • Enhanced Storytelling: Some reviews mention that the narrative feels fragmented and could benefit from clearer storytelling elements or more engaging lore.

Summary

  • In summary, Mortal Shell presents a unique take on the Souls-like genre with its atmospheric design and innovative mechanics, but it struggles with combat frustrations, level design issues, and a lack of variety that some players find limiting. The game may appeal to dedicated fans of the genre, particularly at a discounted price, but it may not meet the expectations of all players.
