A reboot of the popular first-person shooter series, developed by Anshar Studios from Poland (creators of Gamedec) and 3D Realms company. Painkiller allows us to fight as one of four godly Champions and take part in the extermination of hell hordes in the Purgatory. We can play alone or in 4-person coop mode.
Painkiller is a reboot of the action-packed FPS series, started by the game released under the same title back in 2004. Unlike the original, which was the work of the People Can Fly studio, the reboot was developed by another Polish team, Anshar Studios. The studio has in its portfolio games such as Heavy Fire: Red Shadow and Gamedec.
In Painkiller we view the action from a first-person perspective (FPP).
While traversing Purgatory, we mainly focus on eliminating hordes of enemies. On our way, we encounter the classic "cannon fodder", appearing here in large quantities, as well as more powerful monsters. We are primarily talking about demons equipped with unique powers or Nephilim who are the devilish children of the fallen angel Azazel.
The fights are dynamic and their pace is increased by the possibility of hooking onto environmental elements and covering considerable distances in the air. Thanks to this, we can both "jump" to enemies and evacuate to a safe distance when things get too hot around us.
The game provides us with an extensive arsenal that includes both guns known from previous Painkiller productions, as well as a number of new firearms. As we progress, we also collect tarot cards, which increase our combat potential by strengthening selected stats and abilities.
The reboot allows us to embody four characters, named Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch. The strong points of each of them are respectively: energy, health, strength, and damage dealt to enemies.
The action of Painkiller takes place in Purgatory, where we end up in the skin of the character we have chosen. The voice of the Creator proposes a deal to us, within which we are to become one of his Champions. In exchange for thwarting the plans of the fallen angel Azazel, who intends to turn the Earth into a real hell, we are to achieve salvation.
Painkiller allows for single-player fun or cooperative gameplay for up to three people.
Painkiller operates on the Unreal Engine.

Painkiller review: An empty shell exploiting a legendary brand
The new Painkiller is not a good game. This is not a title that almost succeeded or has untapped potential that modders will fix. This is a short production, poorly made and ill-conceived at almost every level.

The new Painkiller is not just a reboot of a well-known Polish game franchise, but also a chance to bring back the trendy term „Doomlike.” There are a lot of similarities to the recent Doomslayer adventures, but there's also something new that was never in Doom before.

The game is an enhancement on the original and lots of fun as long as you accept it for what it is and enjoy the ride.

Painkiller is a reboot of the old 2004 shooter that’s now built around co-op for up to three players. You’ll battle hordes of demons in gothic, lavishly detailed environments. Painkiller offers replayability in its loop, but the repetitiveness made me not go for the replay, and I was able to finish it in a single sitting. The mechanics are fast and arcade, but the execution has some serious problems. Solo play is particularly weak due to ineffective bot companions. Teaming up with friends to mow through hordes of enemies is a plus. Enemies just soak up damage without reacting or staggering.
Gameffine: 60 / 100 by Jay Krishnan
Painkiller is a hard game to recommend. It’s certainly not made with the loyal fans in mind and does little to appeal to the new crowd. Even if you’re dead-set on getting on sale, I recommend buying your best mates extra copies because the real painkillers are the friends we made along the way.
