At the end of today's Future Games Show, the Painkiller remake from Saber Interactive and 3D Realms was the „one more thing” at the end of the showcase.
Today, the Future Games Show Spring Showcase featured fifty-five total games over a livestream that lasted for over two hours. If you’re up for watching the whole thing, you are welcome to, but you can also check out this article and more at Gamepressure for some of the highlights. The showcase had a “one more thing” at the end of the presentation, which finally brought a long-dormant franchise back from the dead.
The very end of the presentation revealed Painkiller, the first-person shooter originally created by developer People Can Fly, who also made an appearance in today’s showcase. This remake is being developed by Saber Interactive (Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2) and 3D Realms (Duke Nukem) and will feature full co-op action, via the announcement trailer. The original Painkiller game was released all the way back in 2004, over twenty years ago.
Based on the trailer, it appears that some of the original story will remain intact. Stuck in purgatory, the protagonist agrees to fight Lucifer’s armies in hell in exchange for acceptance to heaven. The trailer shows myriad weapon types, from grenade launchers to lightning guns as the protagonist plows through hordes of various enemies. The end of the trailer revealed plans for a Fall 2025 release window, which means players won’t have to wait long to get their hands on this remake.
Saber Interactive and 3D Realms seem like the perfect duo to handle this remake. Earlier this year, Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 won over action fans, even earning a Game Award nomination for Best Action Game. As this is very much a boomer-shooter inspired game, it will also be great to have 3D Realms helping out as well.
For now, we will have to wait to hear more about this new Painkiller. With events like Summer Game Fest on the horizon, and potential for a Fall release date, it seems likely that we will learn more about this game during one of those summer showcases. There is no shortage of exciting games to look forward to these days.
