TRON: Catalyst is an action-adventure game set in the science fiction universe created for the TRON film series. The game was developed by Bithell Games studio, which has in its portfolio such projects as Thomas Was Alone, Volume, John Wick Hex, and The Solitaire Conspiracy.

Gameplay

In TRON: Catalyst we watch the action in an isometric view.

Network exploration

We can explore the Arq network (known from the game Tron: Identity) on foot or on a Light Cycle. Along the way, we meet the characters (or rather - programs) inhabiting it and perform various quests, gradually uncovering the secrets of this place and pushing the plot forward.

Hero's skills

During exploration, the unique ability of the main character plays a crucial role. Due to a Glitch, the Arq network becomes destabilized and gets stuck in a time loop, which the protagonist can use to their advantage, gaining access to secret areas and unlocking useful shortcuts. Skillful use of the chaos caused by the Glitch also allows him to gain the favor of individual factions.

Combat

Fighting opponents also plays an important role in the game. The clashes are dynamic, and during them we can engage in both close combat duels and eliminate enemies from a distance. Our main weapon is the Identity Disc. As we progress, we gather fragments of data, which help us develop the protagonist.

Tron as a franchise has too many tabs open.

The combat and look of the game are boring. The atmosphere and music are detached and out of alignment with the story. The light cycle is fun, but you’re very restrained in where you can use it. And ultimately, while the time loop makes the story and progression more interesting, that arguably worthwhile story is attached to a fairly humdrum action game wearing all of the expected components of the Tron aesthetic.

TRON: Catalyst gets off to a good start, promising varied gameplay and a neat time-loop mechanic. The trouble is, it soon devolves in a dull affair with way too much repetitive combat, and the time-loop mechanic is mostly wasted.

The main pros of the game

  • World-Building and Aesthetic: The game successfully immerses players in the TRON universe with a vibrant, neon-lit art style and well-crafted locales. Many players appreciated the attention to detail and the lore codex that helps explain the game's complex terms.
  • Voice Acting: The quality of voice acting received praise, with standout performances that enhanced character immersion.
  • Combat Mechanics: Players found the combat enjoyable, with a variety of attacks and the ability to upgrade skills, making it engaging during battles.
  • Soundtrack: The music, a mix of techno and EDM, was noted as fitting for the TRON universe and added to the overall experience.
  • Nostalgia for TRON Fans: Many players who are fans of the TRON franchise felt a sense of nostalgia and enjoyment from exploring the world and interacting with familiar elements.

The main cons of the game

  • Story and Character Development: Several reviews pointed out that the story felt weak and failed to evoke strong emotions. Characters, including the protagonist Exo, lacked depth and backstory, making it hard for players to connect with them.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: The combat and exploration became repetitive too quickly, with limited enemy variety and a skill tree that maxed out too fast. Some players felt that the time-loop mechanic was underutilized and did not add meaningful choices to gameplay.
  • Lack of Exploration Incentives: Many users noted that while the maps were large, they felt empty and that there were missed opportunities for collectables and side quests that could enhance exploration.
  • Technical and Presentation Issues: Some players criticized the graphics as dated and the overall presentation as lacking polish, with static NPCs and minimal animations during dialogues.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Branching Storylines or Choices: Players expressed a desire for more meaningful choices and branching paths that could affect the story, especially given the game's emphasis on the looping mechanic.
  • Expanded Skill Trees and Combat Options: Users wanted a more extensive skill tree and varied combat options to keep gameplay fresh and engaging throughout the experience.
  • More Interactive NPCs: The lack of interaction with a broader range of NPCs and the limited voice acting for non-essential characters made the world feel lifeless.
  • Enhanced Use of Light Cycles: Players wished for more dynamic use of light cycles, as they felt the current implementation was shallow and did not fully utilize the potential of this iconic element from the TRON franchise.

Summary

  • Overall, while TRON: Catalyst has its strengths, particularly in aesthetics and nostalgia for fans, it struggles with story depth, gameplay variety, and technical execution, leaving many players disappointed.
