A tactical RPG. Valiant Tactics features turn-based gameplay taking place on hexagonal maps. The fights are devoid of the randomness factor, as specific attacks always hit the target and deal preset amount of damage. The story of the game takes place in a fantasy universe and we can control a small group of characters who reset between sessions.
Valiant Tactics is the debut project of the three-person Georgian indie studio Felid Entertainment. Set in a quasi-medieval fantasy universe, this tactical RPG is characterized by turn-based battles devoid of randomness (including RNG).
We control five heroes (with three "reserves") and conduct a roguelite campaign, participating in subsequent short battles on hexagonal boards. Thanks to the lack of accuracy throws and other random elements, the course of battles is predictable. The enemy's intentions are signaled, and each strike deals a certain amount of damage. This means that after making a move, we already know what damage our side will suffer in the next turn, and success depends on the sequence of skills that weaken or redirect this inevitable loss. Some tiles have status effects, such as poison clouds, slowing mud, and temporary boosts, but even they are subject to deterministic rules displayed by the interface.
The map linking skirmishes changes with each approach. Nodes representing battles, random events, merchants, and rest places are drawn from a selected pool and create a branched route. Since health or consumable items move from node to node, the gameplay in Valiant Tactics becomes an exercise in calculating gains and losses. Between battles, we can swap reserve heroes, distribute newly acquired equipment, modify talent points, and review progress. Nothing, however, signifies a permanent increase in power. Individual heroes are reset between games, and the only permanent benefits are additional classes, artifacts, and cosmetic badges.
Character classes unlock after meeting certain conditions, and each of them has a fixed basic set and a small skill tree. A hero who meets the general attribute threshold is able to use any weapon, which allows for unusual combinations.
After the game ends, we receive a detailed summary of our actions. The game shows us the turn in which the team's position became irretrievable, and lists overlooked synergies, like the effect of a weapon with a skill. Given that every number in the fight is set from the beginning, the summary indicates specific choices, not abstract probabilities. Failures in Valiant Tactics bring tangible benefits - we become stronger in subsequent attempts, but not by gaining the next levels of the same character.
After the murder of the rightful monarch, the usurper plunged the kingdom into chaos and left the cities, roads, and cemeteries unprotected. Bandits fight for loot, necromancers create armies of corpses, and wild beasts roam far beyond their usual territories. The player-controlled Valiant Tactics group of warriors sets off to the capital to restore order.
Valiant Tactics is running on the Unity engine.
