Battle Brothers for PC is a turn-based game which blends elements of strategies and RPGs together. The player is taken to a dark-fantasy land which, in terms of the atmosphere, brings George R.R Martin's world from A Song of Ice and Fire to mind. The player takes on the role of a commander in control of a group of mercenaries. Battle Brothers was both developed and published by the German Overhype Studios, whose game-dev debut it is. The creators were inspired by such games as Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, Mount & Blade, Jagged Alliance or the first installment of the X-COM series.

Plot

Battle Brothers takes the player to an original, medieval-like, low-fantasy world, that is, a place that resembles the real world to a more extent, and where supernatural elements are reduced to rare occurrences. One does not witness here any glorious fight between good and evil, paladins wearing shining armors, or mages in colorful robes. The world of Battle Brothers is gray and harsh, filled with ordinary people working hard to earn their living and having fairly insignificant goals. Villagers cultivate the neighbouring lands, fighting back bandits and robbers. As for the nobility, they plot intrigues against other families.

Battle Brothers Switch Review - True Gem for Hundreds of Hours

2021 is a strange year that will take away a lot of big launches. It doesn't hurt me at all, though, because through Battle Brothers on Switch, I don't have time for anything else anyway.

When it gets going, Battle Brothers has enough to offer to make this a great game, but optimization issues and steep learning curve will have some retreating early.

GameSkinny: 7 / 10

Battle Brothers is a well-made game from the technical standpoint, but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired.

Digitally Downloaded: 3.5 / 5 by Matt Sainsbury

You've just got to persevere with Battle Brothers to really appreciate it, and it really is the epitome of the saying "it's a marathon, rather than a sprint". Once you've overcome the horrible excuse for a "tutorial" and onboarding process, you've then got to deal with some really repetitive quest design and an astronomically unforgivable difficulty curve. But, slowly, the game starts to open up, and before you know it, you realise that you're really enjoying this thing. It's expansive, it's complex, it's nuanced and it puts complete control over the story and quest in your hands. It's everything good about Mount & Blade, but in a more compact, turn-based format. It's no wonder the game has become a beloved hit on Steam, with fans pouring hundreds - if not thousands - of hours into it. It's not quite the same experience on Switch, and yet I can't see a scenario where I tear myself away from it, now I've pushed through its various walls. A truly fascinating example of a game that's just worth the effort.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Tactical Combat: Players appreciate the depth of tactical gameplay, including the use of historical strategies like shieldwalls and positioning, which make battles feel immersive and rewarding.
  • High Replayability: The procedurally generated world and variety of missions/events provide a fresh experience with each playthrough, encouraging players to return to the game.
  • Character Progression and Customization: The game allows for significant character development, and players enjoy the challenge of building and optimizing their mercenary company.
  • Atmospheric and Thematic Consistency: The medieval fantasy setting is well-crafted, and the game's art and music contribute to an immersive experience.
  • Active Modding Community: Players appreciate the ease of modding, which can enhance gameplay and introduce new content.

The main cons of the game

  • High Difficulty and Learning Curve: Many players find the game overly challenging, especially for newcomers. The early game can be particularly brutal, leading to frustration.
  • RNG (Random Number Generation) Issues: Players frequently express dissatisfaction with the RNG mechanics, feeling that they undermine strategy and can lead to unpredictable outcomes in combat.
  • Lack of Documentation and Tutorials: Several reviews mention the insufficient guidance for new players, making it difficult to grasp game mechanics without external resources.
  • Technical Issues: Some players report frequent crashes and save file corruption, which can lead to lost progress and frustration.
  • Limited Character Depth: While there is customization, some players feel that character builds lack diversity and uniqueness.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Better Documentation and Tutorials: Users desire a more comprehensive tutorial system that explains game mechanics in detail, rather than relying on vague loading screen tips.
  • Exploration Incentives: Some players feel that the game discourages exploration due to its timer-based mechanics, which can lead to a focus on efficiency rather than enjoying the world.
  • Controller Support: A few users expressed a wish for better controller support, particularly for devices like the Steam Deck.
  • More Character Relationships: Some players hope for updates that would allow for deeper character interactions and relationships, enhancing the narrative aspect of the game.
  • Balanced Difficulty Scaling: There are calls for better balance in difficulty progression, particularly in the early game, to retain player interest and reduce frustration.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Battle Brothers" is celebrated for its tactical depth and engaging gameplay, it faces criticism for its steep learning curve, RNG mechanics, and technical issues. Many players recommend it, particularly for those who enjoy hardcore strategy games, but caution newcomers about its challenges.
