Last update: 19 May 2022

This guide to Humankind will help you get acquainted with the basic rules of the game and with further chapters, support you in your quest to lead your nation to victory. In the tutorial you will find information about the first steps in the game, the basics of development, and a handful of starting tips. Humankind is a strategy where you need to plan your moves not just a few turns ahead, but also keep in mind the long-term development of your nation.

In addition to the beginner's guide, our guide offers insight into the world of the game and explains the most important mechanics governing it. Territories, outposts and cities are the bread and butter of development. Developing means raising an army, which can be used to expand the borders of our nation or defend against other civilzations' attempts to destroy us. Your nation can change its culture after every era. New culture level means new opportunities and better bonuses, including the ability to recruit special units or build unique districts for your city.

The game is based on several currencies and resources which steady supply is the key to victory. Those include food, industry points, money, or science points. These 4 currencies form an acronym: FIMS. That's not the end - each city is defined by statistics such as Morale, Stability and Influence. When it comes to the latter, we are talking about a special currency needed for establishing new outposts and adding newly acquired territories to your dominion. Sound familiar? Yes - other titles from Amplitude Studies used the same mechanics. If you had an opportunity to play Endless Legends or Endless Space, you'll feel right at home (you'll even recognize some icons)

The guide also includes an extensive section on special mechanics, such as religion, the civics system, technology and diplomacy. Each section offers tips that will help you grasp the concepts presented above. A separate part of the guide has been dedicated to warfare, explaining actions such as preparations, conducting battles and laying sieges. Unlike the classic 4X strategy equivalents, e.g. Civilization 6, in Humankind units are combined into armies that conduct battles in a separate mode, although still on the main map of the game. The last chapter of the guide is dedicated to Fame a marker that serves as a measure of your progress - to achieve victory, you need to have more points than the remaining nations. The ways of gaining fame are listed in a separate chapter of the guide - How to win the game.

Humankind: Quick Starting Tips

  1. Divide your units into groups: once you get additional units, consider splitting your army into two groups. Simply click on the unit portrait (or select several units) in the army screen and give the order to move. You can freely split or fuse armies, as the action only costs movement points. More units on the map will help you with exploration, hunting, or finding bonuses scattered around the map.
  2. Explore the map in search of Scientific Curiosities: these finds are definitely worth it. Each Scientific Curosity provides you with additional science and influence points. The latter is needed for capturing new territories and developing cities. Moreover, finding these bonuses is safer than fighting animals, often a better way to advance to a new era.
  3. Build an outpost: all your units have the ability to build outposts - buildings needed for attaining control over a given territory. Gather Curiosities to gain Influence Points. Each region has set boundaries that will not change throughout the game. The outposts are a first step on the path to build cities and gather resources. The game will help you by showing which location in the given territory is the most resource-rich. Look for fields with a lot of rivers and forests. Avoid swamps and rocky or desert regions. Such zones are not viable for the creation of your first city.
  4. Collect Era Stars to advance to the ancient era: In the Neolithic era, there aren't many development options. To establish a city and really begin the game you need to advance to the Ancient Era. Without a city, you will not be able to train new units or build further cities, acquire technology or introduce new laws. Cities are the backbone of your empire.
  5. Choose a culture that fits your situation on the map: as you advance to the next era, you can choose a leading culture. This will not only distinguish you from other nations, but also provide unique bonuses, districts and units.
