MindsEye's main character voice actor expressed his disapproval of releasing unfinished games. In his opinion, studios should be honest with consumers.
MindsEye holds the dubious title of the worst game released in 2025, as evidenced by very low ratings on Metacritic. There are many reasons for this situation, but one of the most important is the poor technical condition. The game from Build A Rocket Boy studio was clearly released in an unfinished form, and the devs probably hoped to fix it after the launch.
Alex Hernandez, the voice actor of the main character of MindsEye, Jacob Diaz, as well as the protagonist of Mafia 3, Lincoln Clay, criticized such an approach. During the interview with Check It TV, he admitted that he doesn't like it when developers ask for the full price for an unfinished product.
He thinks that in the end, these actions do more harm than good to the studio's reputation. As an example - apart from MindsEye - he pointed out Cyberpunk 2077. I think we all remember the technical mess of the 2020 release from CD Projekt RED, especially on PS4 and XOne consoles.
I am not a businessman, I have no idea why such decisions are made. From a consumer perspective, and I'm sure a lot of people feel this way - I think it does more long-term harm than good to your reputation to release something that is in a state of less than 100% and then charge 100% of the price.
The actor emphasizes that studios should be honest with their consumers. It would be better to just admit that the game is unfinished and release it as a beta version with a promise of post-launch improvements. Of course, the price should then be significantly lower, which is probably the most demotivating aspect for developers in this context.
I, as a consumer, would rather be told up front, because then I know what I'm signing up for.
Build A Rocket Boy is already facing the consequences of the game's disastrous release. We recently learned that the studio is preparing for major layoffs, which may affect over 100 employees.
