MindsEye didn't excite either players nor reviewers. For that, it quickly lived to see a considerable discount in a certain store.
MindsEye received a less-than-honorable distinction: it is currently the worst-rated game of 2025 on Metacritic, although with a modest number of reviews.
The first game from Build a Rocket Boy studio had a standout debut, even among launches that even the most optimistic wouldn't call successful. The title that came out last week reminded some people of Cyberpunk 2077 - and it wasn't about the enjoyment of the game or the engaging story, but about the state of the console release of the Polish production, which led to Sony approving refunds.
The devs quickly promised fixes and last Friday they released the first hotfix. Unfortunately, you can only make a first impression once, and in this case, it turned out to be disastrous. After all, even that modest improvement, whatever it was, didn't help MindsEye much. Since our last news, the percentage of positive reviews on Steam has dropped from 40% to 38%, which means that the game's ratings are no longer "mixed" but "mostly negative."
The game doesn't fare better in journalists' reviews, although it should be added that so far only 9 ratings have been given for the PC version (via Metacritic). However, even these few reviews leave no doubt about the assessment of the Build a Rocket Boy studio's work by the media. A Metascore of 37/100 and best ratings around 5/10 don't really give a good impression of Mindseye.
Here and there, we can find praise for individual elements, whether it's character voices or the "atmospheric" soundtrack (although these aren't common). But even the relatively kind reviewers were not understanding in their assessment of the gameplay, at best rating it as "functional." The combat isn't really the strong point of the game, especially since the enemy AI is "terrible," which doesn't make up for these shortcomings with other mechanics, story, or characters.
We mentioned associations with Cyberpunk 2077, but the latest news may bring to mind another title that didn't arouse enthusiasm at its launch: Fallout 76. Similar to the old Bethesda game, someone managed to find MindsEye on sale at Walmart for 20 bucks, which is less than half the price (via Reddit / The Gamer).
Let's say that again: we are talking about a game that "launched" a week ago. Such a quick price reduction doesn't really indicate a successful game. At least for now it is not included with the controllers for free. For now.
Of course, there is a chance that Build a Rocket Boy will manage to redeem MindsEye - it wouldn't be the first such case. Both Cyberpunk 2077 and Fallout 76 have finally gotten back on track, much like perhaps the most famous example of a salvaged title: No Man's Sky.
However, as one of the reviewers put it, "in its current state, the so-called 10-year journey promised in MindsEye could not have started on more unstable ground." The developer would have to work miracles for the game to actually turn out as great as promised before the release.
