USSR Update for Hearts of Iron 4 Will be Massive

Paradox Development employees are back from vacation, and so is their Dev Diary. Yesterday, new information was published regarding the Barbarossa update for Hearts of Iron 4. The Soviet Union is about to undergo a lot of changes.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • The developers' latest post discusses the planned changes related to the Soviet Union rework;
  • The free update 1.11 will bring a ton of changes related to the military, economy and political decisions. An interesting addition for USSR players will be Stalin's paranoia system, inspired by the Great Purge among the dictator's opponents and allies;
  • We don't know the release date of the No Step Back expansion or the free update Barbarossa.

ManoDeZombi, the author of yesterday's post regarding Paradox Interactive's grand war strategy, pointed out that update 1.11, titled Barbarossa, required a separate team of devs to work on it. This was because the free patch to be introduced together with the No Step Back DLC is connected with a long list of changes in the functioning of the army, economy or political decisions which players will have access to.

One interesting new feature will be Joseph Stalin's "paranoia" system, which will affect those playing as the Soviet Union. When activated around 1936, players will be tasked with properly controlling the dictator's mental state by making the correct decisions. If Stalin's paranoia level exceeds 25 points, random purges will begin to occur in the game. Political murders on a larger scale will be triggered if we reach more than 75 points. The mechanics of Stalin's Paranoia is a reference to a period of unrest in the USSR, which led to a series of murders of citizens, military and party members. These events are known in modern times as the Great Purge or the Great Terror.

Other new features in the game include a propaganda campaign system, available to all communist nations. The chain of our decisions will enable us to choose up to three of twenty-four campaigns influencing the citizens of our countries. These campaigns will introduce the possibility of taking advantage of many bonuses, strengthening the army or raising production levels.

So far Paradox has not revealed the release date of Barbarossa and the No Step Back DLC.

Hearts of Iron 4 is a grand-strategy game released on June 6, 2016 by Paradox Interactive. As in previous installments, we control the fate of a selected historical nation in the interwar and World War II periods. A characteristic feature of the games from the series is the faithful recreation of historical realities. How the events known from history will unfold depends only on us.
