Future Bethesda Games Will be Exclusive to Game Pass Platforms

Phil Spencer clarified the matter of exclusivity of future Bethesda Softworks games after the studio was acquired by Microsoft last year. These titles will come out exclusively on platforms where the Xbox Game Pass service is available.

IN A NUTSHELL:

  1. Phil Spencer stated recently that future games from Bethesda Softworks will be exclusive to platforms where with Xbox Game Pass subscription available;
  2. Xbox boss assured that the company has no plans to back away from its existing commitments, and that games that are already available on other devices will remain there.

During the event associated with the official acquisition of Bethesda Softworks by Microsoft, Phil Spencer addressed an issue that troubles many gamers - the potential exclusivity of future games from the creators of The Elder Scrolls series for Xbox consoles. It looks like these titles will be available on all platforms that have Xbox Game Pass subscriptions (currently Xbox consoles and PCs).

“If you’re an Xbox customer, the thing I want you to know is that this is about delivering great exclusive games for you that ship on platforms where Game Pass exists. That’s our goal, that’s why we’re doing this, that’s the root of this partnership that we’re building. And when we're done, the creative opportunities we'll be able to deliver to Xbox customers will be the best they've ever been," Phil Spencer said.

In doing so, the Xbox boss stressed that this doesn't apply to games that are already available on other platforms - we don't have to worry about them being pulled from them.

"So obviously I can’t sit here and say every Bethesda game is exclusive, because we know that’s not true. There’s contractual obligations that we’re going to see through, as we always do in every one of these instances. We have games that exist on other platforms, and we’re gonna go support those games on the platforms they’re on. There’s communities of players and we love those communities and we’ll continue to invest in them. And even in the future there might be things that have contractual things, or legacy on different platforms that we’ll go do," the Xbox boss stated.

It is worth noting that Bethesda Softworks is currently working on two highly anticipated RPGs - Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI.

The acquisition of ZeniMax Media (owner of Bethesda Softworks) by Microsoft was announced in September last year and was one of the biggest industry events of the last twelve months. The Redmond giant spent $7.5 billion on this transaction, but this amount will certainly more than pay for itself.
