Magic Molotov Bug in CS:GO Defies Laws of Physics

Finding bugs in CS:GO has become something of a sport for some players. Yesterday, one of them shared an interesting new bug concerning Molotov cocktail on Reddit.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • A Reddit user posted a video explaining how a newly discovered bug in CS:GO works;
  • The bug is a Molotov cocktail that can be thrown farther than it should be under certain conditions;
  • The bug was discovered on two of the game's maps.

The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive community specializes in finding bugs in their beloved game. From time to time the forums are filled with reports of new bugs that could affect the overall balance. Such finding was shared on Reddit by user YourGenericName, who analyzed an interesting glitch associated with the use of Molotov cocktail under certain conditions.

A video explaining the phenomenon was also posted on YouTube:

The video uses an example on the Overpass, where under the right conditions a Molotov cocktail can be thrown from the top of the map all the way to the bottom edge, to bombsite B, which contradicts molotov's normal functioning. This is due, in short, to two factors: the physics of the Molotov cocktail in the game, and the properties of the so-called skyboxes, which are the textures used to show realistic sky.

Under normal circumstances, the incendiary bottle should explode no more than 2 seconds after it is thrown. It is also important if the molotov detects a physical object underneath it, otherwise it will explode in mid-air. However, when a molotov encounters a skybox, it must fly on, as it has made contact with a texture on which it cannot ignite.

In this way, the molotov can be exploited whenever a suitable trajectory passing through a skybox is found on the map. This is no simple task, of course, but the bug was also found on Inferno, and it's very likely that we'll be seeing examples from all of the other CS:GO battlegrounds in the coming days.
