Cheats Can Disconnect You From a CS:GO Server

A video has surfaced on Reddit, suggesting that there are CS:GO cheats that enable cheaters to disconnect opponents from the server. As it turns out, the problem has been around for some time.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Reddit discovered a type of cheat that enables the cheater to disconnect other players from the server;
  2. It turns out that the problem has existed since 2016;
  3. There is a functioning command that enables us to block the cheats from working.

The problem with cheaters in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is unfortunately widespread and, despite the developers' best efforts, still remains unsolved. Recently, a new problem has come to light for honest players to deal with. A video was posted on Reddit, which shows an unusual phenomenon. It could be a kind of cheat that disconnects the opponent from the server after entering an appropriate command:

As seen in the video by user CMDR_Lina_Inv, the opposing team's player starts a countdown before the round starts. After a certain amount of time has passed, the player is disconnected from the server. It turns out that the problem may not be new at all, but only occurred rarely enough to go unnoticed until now.

In 2016, a Vietnamese player encountered a similar problem and decided to share his suspicions in a video on YouTube:

User Khôi Tran Anh complained that after being disconnected from the game, he was unable to re-enter it. He also did not receive a temporary ban, which he should have received for leaving the match. There was not even a trace of the match itself - neither in the history of matches, nor in the recorded replays, as if it never took place. Similar stories have been reported over the years on various forums related to CS:GO:

"During warmup, everything seemed ok, but as soon as the game began things started getting weird, every single time my team had an opportunity to win the round, all of the team got disconnected for a few seconds (like when the game freezes and that red timer appears in the top right corner of the screen). Thus we lost the rounds. Only when we were about to win, either about to kill the last terrorist, or about to defuse the bomb.

Then a while later, when this happened again, at least myself got disconnected from the server, thrown back to the main menu, could not reconnect, and when I restarted the game, no option to reconnect appeared, as if I had abandoned the match, no ban though. I was the top fragger," writes user BleaKrytE on the Steam forum.

In the comments in the same thread, one player wrote that supposedly there is a certain command that enable you to "freeze" the entire server and thus disconnect players, but it is somewhat detectable:

"The cheaters have a function called "unknown" that crashes the server if they feel like they are going to lose. This function is mostly used against other cheaters to crash the server and delete the save.. But however, this function 70% results in a vac ban. so it was a big risk for the player who did it.

The reason i wrote "unknown" because i never seen that function with my own eyes. I just heard that Aim ware users can possibly do that," writes user dezzy on the Steam forum.

Similar issues have also been reported on the popular CS:GO forum HLTV.org.

It looks like Valve has yet another security hole in their systems that hasn't been patched in years, and something needs to be done about it. At the current rate of patching CS:GO it could be a long time. For now, let's just be happy that this particular cheat isn't widespread and somewhat detectable. Finally, I'll leave you with a tip from Reddit user Mikoboy, who found an ad hoc solution to the disconnect hack problem:

"Pro tip: Use "logaddress_add 1" few times to freeze your game just before the auto disconnect timer ends and you will not get kicked from the game. The game just freezes for a while and should continue after the kick if you manged to do it right. Easiest way is to bind that command to a key and then just tap that key slowly for a while. Won against a cheater this way."
