In the first two days on PS Plus, DayZ was claimed by over one million subscribers. Despite adding hundreds of servers to the game, there still wasn't enough.
Yesterday, new free games arrived on PS Plus for subscribers at every level. These three games are only available for the month of August, so if you are interested, don’t wait to claim them. This month, one of those games is the zombie apocalypse survival simulator, DayZ. According to the social media page for the game, over one million players have already claimed the title on PS Plus, and over 300,000 players jumped in on the first day. This surge of players has caused some server issues, but the team is actively rolling out more servers to address the issue.
DayZ left early access on PC in 2018 and came to consoles a year later. I knew this game was popular, but I didn’t know it would still hit numbers like this on console over six years after launch. Sure, a free game is going to lower the barriers of entry for many people, but still, there are only four games on Steam that reached over 300,000 players in the last twenty-four hours, and one of them is a banana clicker.
To give a sense of the scale, in their post on social media explaining the news, the DayZ team apologized to fans for the overload on their servers the day of the PS Plus release. “To those who experienced server issues last night, we sincerely apologize. We deployed 300+ new servers in preparation, but they were at capacity.” With a maximum of 60 people per server, 300 new servers would account for an extra 18,000 players. With some quick math, this means that the number of players that jumped in yesterday exceeded the developer’s expectations by at least 16 times.
Responses on social media were generally positive. Many people, even the official social media account for another survival game, Rust, acknowledged DayZ’s success. If anything, it seems like the number of people claiming and trying DayZ on PS Plus will only continue from here. Hopefully, the team is able to add a few more servers soon.
