Toby Fox, the creator of Deltarune and Undertale, shared some new information about the upcoming third and fourth chapters of Deltarune. Fans have been waiting for an update on this game since Chapter 2 was released in September of 2021, and we learned during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on April 2nd that the new console will launch with both Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 on June 5th. The new chapters will also be available on other platforms, not just the Switch 2. But there’s more exciting news: Fox is making this the best time to jump into Deltarune on the console of your choice.

Deltarune will have “Cross-Buy”: upgraded versions for newer consoles are free

Deltarune will have “Coss-Buy,” which means, according to Fox’s newsletter, “when you buy Deltarune on the PlayStation Store, you get both PS4 and PS5 versions for one price! And… We’re gonna do (basically) the same thing on Nintendo platforms!” So, if you have decided to stick with your PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch, you won’t have to repurchase the game to get the upgraded version if you eventually decide to get the new console. PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch 2 have backwards compatibility, but it is common practice to have different versions of the games for each platform.

If you are a fan of Deltarune already, you might be wondering about future chapters. On June 5th, the game will have four chapters to play. Fox has previously spoken about his plans to include seven chapters in total. On the game’s website, the FAQ page states that future chapters will “be made available as free updates once they’re ready to release.” On June 5th, the first four chapters will cost $24.99, but the remaining fifth, sixth, and seventh chapters will be free after that initial purchase. Overall, not a bad price for what could end up being an iconic RPG experience, much like Undertale.

Much of the rest of the newsletter shared details about Deltarune’s exact release timing. Regarding the Switch 2, the most relevant information will be how quickly each individual can actually obtain one. Still, it will be released locally at midnight for Switch 2 on June 5th, but the chances are not great for everyone to have their new console delivered by then. But for every other platform, it will be released globally at midnight Japan time. This means that for a large part of the world, especially in the U.S. and Europe, the game will actually be available on June 4th: 8:00 AM Pacific time, 11:00 AM Eastern time, and 5:00 PM Central European time.

The fact that a free version of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Deltarune comes with a purchase on the original Nintendo Switch almost feels like it flies in the face of Nintendo. Fans have not been happy with the way Nintendo is pricing games for its new console. Not only is $80 for Mario Kart World making fans unhappy, but a handful of games with Nintendo Switch 2 versions will cost users at least $10 on top of what they already paid for the game when it was initially released, which has not been received well.
