Dyson Sphere Program Achieves Great Success

Daniel Ahmad, Senior Analyst at Niko Partners, reports that Dyson Sphere Program achieved its first major success. The Chinese game has appealed to thousands of players and enjoys „overwhelmingly positive” reviews on Steam.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Early Access game Dyson Sphere Program was a huge success on Steam;
  2. The game, in which we build the eponymous Dyson Spheres - megastructures capable of absorbing all energy produced by a stars - found over 200,000 buyers;
  3. Many players see it as a combination of the popular Factorio and Satisfactory.

On January 21, a game called Dyson Sphere Program, in which the task of players is to build the title spheres - megastructures invented by the American physicist Freeman Dyson, constructed around a star and able to absorb all its energy - appeared in Steam's Early Access. Turns out the project was quite successful. Daniel Ahmad, senior analyst at Niko Partners, who often shares various industry tidbits, reported that the title has already found more than 200,000 buyers. Considering the fact that the project is the work of a small, only five-person team called Youthcat Studio, based in China, we can talk about a great success.

The developers plan that their project will spend about a year in Early Access on Steam. However, as they themselves admit, "it's not carved in stone", and as they intend to listen carefully to players' comments, this period may be extended. Another thing is that, as you can read in the reviews on Valve's platform, the game already offers rich content that enables us to spend at least several pleasant hours in it. Besides, Dyson Sphere Program appears to many players as a combination of the popular Factorio and Satisfactory. All this makes the game enjoy "overwhelmingly positive reviews", 4200 of which are available at the time of writing this message.

Dyson Sphere

Initially, a Dyson Sphere was seen literally as a thick-walled sphere built around a star. Such a structure would have faced a number of problems, not least the immense gravity of the celestial body around which it would be built. After some time, Freeman Dyson himself admitted that in developing his concept, he had in mind a "swarm" or "cloud" of smaller objects located close to each other that would circle the star in independent orbits.

In 2015, many astronomy and extraterrestrial life search enthusiasts believed that the fluctuations in the brightness of the star KIC 8462852 were caused by just such a swarm. Unfortunately, the more plausible explanation was that there is a dust cloud of cometary debris orbiting the star and "obscuring" it from time to time.

The Dyson Sphere Program takes us to a distant future where people need gigantic amounts of energy to power a VR supercomputer. But it didn't occur to them to use their own species as batteries (like in The Matrix); instead, the concept of building a Dyson Sphere was developed. As engineers working for the COSMO space alliance, it is up to us to realize humanity's dream of using all the energy produced by the stars. So we sit behind the steering wheel of our mech and get to work.

Although we start the game with a small space workshop, we quickly begin to develop, gradually expanding our sphere of influence. Constructing the Dyson Sphere requires us to build efficient production chains, extract specific raw materials on various planets and transport them. The matters are complicated by the fact that the universe here is procedurally generated, so each game looks different and involves facing different challenges.

In Dyson Sphere Program, planets are an important source of raw materials, without which the dream of building a Dyson Sphere could not come true.
