Gamers Destroy Elite: Dangerous - Odyssey in Reviews on Steam

Elite: Dangerous - Odyssey was not to the liking of players. Reviews on Steam show that the reception of the game is clearly negative.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • Elite: Dangerous - Odyssey is amassing negative reviews on Steam;
  • Players criticize the optimization, ubiquitous bugs and lack of interesting content;
  • At the same time, they believe that in time the DLC will be fixed, because it has a lot of potential.

Elite: Dangerous - Odyssey was heralded as an ambitious expansion that would completely change the way we've experienced Frontier Developments' game so far. The DLC was to finally enable us to leave the cockpits of spaceships and set our foot on the surface. Thanks to this we would see the vastness of the universe from a different perspective. Additionally, Odyssey was to introduce many new mechanics, tasks and various other ways to play.

While we can consider that these assumptions have been partially fulfilled, their implementation leaves much to be desired. This can be seen in user reviews on Steam, which are anything but gentle with the game. Currently, they are mostly negative, and accusations are directed mainly towards technical shortcomings and the lack of engaging content.

"In its current state, I can only recommend this DLC if you have the patience and can keep a calm mind while dealing with crashes, bugs, lack of optimization and a lack of co-op content. If you're a solo player with a beefy top of the line PC then you're totally fine. But if you're like me, someone who enjoys online games with friends and a mid tier PC, then wait."

"I just played tutorial, but the performance is really bad. I have the recommended 1060 6g and even without other players in an instance, the fps is around 40 on low without antialising and 30 with FXAA (1080p). [...] If you don't have top end PC I would say wait to see if they optimize the game, now it is barely playable."

- Voyta

"Given the current technical condition of this add-on, I can't recommend it, I recommend holding off on buying it until the game is fixed. I hope to be able to change this review to positive at some point, however at this point sadly a negative."

- Brzyden

"The DLC disappointed me a lot, walking and handling of the walk mode would have been interesting maybe 15 years ago, but for today's I expected more than wooden puppets. Very poor execution of the DLC, broken performance on older hardware (map does not work in missions). I rather recommend waiting for patches or another version of this DLC."

Despite the negative reviews, most players also admit that Odyssey has a great potential hidden. To see it realized, however, we'll have to wait. Fixing so many problems may require a lot of work from the creators. At this point, the DLC is probably best described by a fragment neuromancertx's review: "Is it worth buying? It is, but it's not worth playing, at least not before September."
