Extra Storage for Xbox Series X / S is Quite Pricey

We have learned the price of storage expansion cards for Xbox Series S|X. 1 TB of additional disk space will cost us almost as much as a new console.

Dedicated storage expansion cards for new Xboxes will be expensive.
IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Microsoft has opted for dedicated storage expansion cards for Series S and Series X consoles.
  2. Yesterday we learned their price. It is expensive.

We have learned the price of Xbox Series S and Series X storage expansion cards. Seagate's product appeared in Microsoft's official store, where it is priced at $219.99. At this price we receive an additional 1TB of SSD storage, which will take full advantage of the Xbox S and Series X architecture.

Microsoft has opted for dedicated Xbox storage expansion cards, which has had an impact on their prices. When we look at Xbox Series S, which costs $299 and has an SSD with 512 GB, we will realize that adding an extra terabyte of storage space will cost us almost as much as a second console. It is worth reminding here that both Xbox models are equipped with only one slot for expansion cards.

In PlayStation 5 Sony has opted to use normal NVMe M.2 SSDs (with PCIe 4.0 interface) which will have to meet minimum speed requirements. The currently available drives are expensive, that's true, but they will become cheaper faster than a dedicated solution. Let's see if such a decision will not bite Microsoft back later on.
