Ready or Not faces double backlash. First came the censorship, and now it’s the widespread use of AI.
Ready or Not is still catching a lot of heat. The console launch came under major fire over what fans are calling heavy censorship that affected PC version. The devs explained why they had to toned down on the dark themes to support crossplay and pointed out that PC mods could reverse the change, but that hasn’t really calmed anyone down. Now, attention has shifted to the game’s use of AI-generated content.
Ready or Not first launched in Early Access on Steam in December 2021. It quickly got praise for its realistic combat and intense, high-stakes room-clearing action. What really made it stand out from other tactical shooters was the dark tone and gritty, gory visuals. But now, after the recent PC update that came alongside the console launch, things have changed. Some longtime players are so disappointed, they’re even asking for refunds.
The first signs of AI-generated content in Ready or Not popped up soon after the full release in December 2023. People started spotting strange-looking assets, especially on posters. Recently, Ill-Consideration632 shared an image on Reddit of a girl with way too many eyebrows, which set off the whole conversation about the issue all over again.
There has been a ton of AI generated images in this game I’ve noticed. Most of the pictures of people are just AI generated. I have no idea why. If you look really closely at most of the headshots in Brixley Talent it’s really obvious.
Yeah when 1.0 came out it was filled with ai, I had assumed that they would eventually replace those textures with hand made ones, but nope.
I don’t think it’s the biggest sin to use AI on a poster asset (though I still don’t like it tbh) the fact that they didn’t catch the multiple eyebrows is what bothers me most. It says a lot.
Surprisingly, VOID Interactive, the devs behind Ready or Not, haven’t made any official statement confirming the use of AI-generated assets. That might not have been such a big deal if there were just a few scattered cases, but Reddit is full of examples that are hard to ignore. Players have been pointing out not just AI-looking posters, but also environmental art across missions like the Streamer level, Relapse, and Voll’s house. Even the subtitles have been flagged as AI- created. They are all over the game.
Steam updated its policy in January 2024 to require devs to disclose if they’re using generative AI, but Ready or Not’s store page doesn’t mention anything. There could be a few possible reasons for that.
The Steam AI disclosure policy is still pretty new, and it's not exactly crystal clear, which leaves room for loopholes. It also seems like the rule mostly applies to games before they launch, not ones that are already out. Since Ready or Not officially released back in 2023, that was before Valve introduced the new policy.

Been with gamepressure.com since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Love RPGs and classic RTSs, also adore quirky indie games. Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur's Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I'm not gaming, I'm probably painting miniatures or admiring my collection of retro consoles.
