Contraband is a cooperative action game from Avalanche Studios, which was announced in 2021 during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase. Since that moment, we have practically received no new information about this title, which was being developed by the team responsible for the Just Cause series or Mad Max. Unfortunately, it looks like we won't be getting any new materials or releases.

Today, Avalanche Studio issued a statement announcing that work on Contraband has been temporarily suspended. Although the reason for this decision wasn't given, it was noted that the fate of the game is still being considered, and we should expect more info about its future soon.

Over the past several years, Avalanche Studios Group and Xbox Game Studios Publishing have collaborated on Contraband. Active development has now stopped while we evaluate the project's future. We're thankful for the excitement we've seen from the community since we announced and will give an update on what's next as soon as we can.

Jason Schreier has reported that, according to his sources, Microsoft has completely canceled Contraband. So this would be another project that the Redmond giant has canceled recently (alongside Everwild and Perfect Dark). "The temporary pause on working" on Contraband mentioned by Avalanche Studios might just be the first update and not the whole truth about the game's fate. Until these information are confirmed, they should be approached with caution.

We didn't know much about Contraband itself. It was only revealed that in the game we would play as smugglers taking part in heists in the fictional country of Bayan. It was supposed to be an open-world action game with a story campaign for single players or a group of friends. Contraband was planned to be released on XSX/S and PC, and to be made available on Game Pass on day one.
