Ghost of Yotei faces boycott after dev’s controversial tweet mocking Charlie Kirk’s death

A senior developer at Sucker Punch Productions has stirred up major backlash after posting a controversial tweet making fun of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s recent death. Kirk was shot on September 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University. Many players are now boycotting Sucker Punch upcoming game, Ghost of Yotei, and requesting refunds for pre orders.

Sucker Punch in hot water as tweet go viral

Shortly after news broke about Kirk’s death, the Sucker Punch dev took to bluesky and posted: “I hope the shooter’s name is Mario so that Luigi knows his bro got his back.” The post has since been screenshotted and went viral across social media.

People also spotted that a bunch of other game devs from studios like BUNGIE, and The Coalition had liked the tweet, and now many are calling for them to be held responsible, or even kicked from their jobs.

The original tweet remains online, and since then, the same Sucker Punch developer has shared three more posts, each adding to the growing controversy.

Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, is just three weeks away from launching on PlayStation 5. While Sucker Punch hasn’t made an official statement, situations like this can seriously hurt a game’s reputation and sale number.
