The map in Ghost of Yotei will be similar in size to the one in Ghost of Tsushima, but the developers have made sure that the exploration experience is quite different.
Ghost of Yotei is not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, and the game's action takes place in a completely different region of Japan. This time, instead of visiting Tsushima Island, we will explore the area around the titular Mount Yotei, located in present-day Hokkaido. Even though in reality this area is much larger than the island known from the first installment, in the game, their sizes will be similar.
GamePro spoke about the world of Ghost of Yotei with the creative directors of Sucker Punch studio, Nate Fox and Jason Connell. The developers revealed that the size of the map will remain roughly the same as in the previous installment. However, care was taken to make the world seem much larger than in GoT and to offer completely new experiences during exploration.
It's comparable [the Ghost of Yotei map with the Ghost of Tsushima world in terms of size]. It is very, very similar. We devoted a lot of time to make the world seem huge, especially when you come across these large, open areas. That's exactly the impression we got when we visited Hokkaido, this huge, vast place with impressive mountains. It's completely different than Tsushima. That's why it was so important for us that the world seemed big, even if we wanted to have roughly the same area.
The map in Ghost of Tsushima has an area of about 12 square miles. So it's not overly big compared to virtual worlds in other sandboxes, and it will be the same with Ghost of Yotei. The key is supposed to be the pleasure derived from exploration. In this case, the devs want to give players as much freedom as possible, although not as much as in Elden Ring, for example.
The creators underline that they love freedom and it has great significance for them. That's why in Ghost of Yotei, they've made significant changes, including how they tell the story. Instead of classic linear quests, players will be able to freely eliminate key antagonists—although not all of them, as the plot ultimately has to come together as a cohesive whole.
We love freedom. We love it when players have freedom in how they explore the world, and we wanted to develop this even further in this game. We wanted to give our players more freedom of choice: how they approach the story of revenge, how they get weapons, from whom they get them, and in what order they do it.
Ghost of Yotei will be released on October 2 exclusively on PlayStation 5. It's possible that the title will be released on PC in the future.
