Former Marvel Executive on Robert Downey Jr's Involvement; 'They Thought I was Crazy to Hire an Addict'

In 2008 Iron Man began a series of films known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Among the factors contributing to the success of the movie was Robert Downey Jr. Audiences immediately liked the charismatic actor, who seemed the perfect embodiment of Tony Stark. However, when the search for a lead actor was underway, Marvel's management was reluctant to hire Downey Jr. (via Variety).

At the time, the president of Marvel Studios was David Maisel, and thanks to a focus poll among children, it was discovered that of all Marvel characters, those surveyed would most like to play with Tony Stark's toy. This gave the green light for the first Iron Man, but what was still missing was the most important piece, i.e. the actor for the main role.

David Maisel revealed that he sided with Robert Downey Jr, who is now unequivocally associated with the superhero. The aforementioned star did not have a good reputation at the time. The 1996 incident, when he was arrested for possession of heroin, cocaine and an unloaded gun, was still remembered. However, Maisel had faith in the actor and it was he whom he wanted to see in the title role:

We can easily understand the board's objections. Marvel has mortgaged its vast library in order to take out a loan and film Iron Man. The failure of the movie would have meant the end of the comic book giant, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe would never have been made. In the end, however, it turned out that Robert Downey Jr. was sensationally successful in the role of Tony Stark.
