We have good news for fans of Lord of the Rings. Work is underway on a new game set in Middle-earth.

  1. The project is being developed by Weta Workshop. The team has so far specialized in creating special effects for movies. It was this company that was responsible for this aspect in Peter Jackson's cinematic adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
  2. The game's release is scheduled for the 2024 fiscal year, or between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024.
  3. The game is to be based on the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, rather than film or TV adaptations of his work.
  4. The game is being financed by Private Division, the publishing arm of Take-Two Interactive. Titles previously released in this manner include The Outer Worlds and Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, as well as today's Rollerdrome.

Unfortunately, that's where the available information ends. No title of the game, target platforms or even what genre it will belong to were provided.

It is worth mentioning that Weta Workshop's entry into the video game market should not come as a surprise. After all, last year the studio was bought out (for more than $1.6 billion) by Unity, the maker of one of the most popular graphics engines on the game market.

We will still have to wait a long time for Weta Workshop's game, but fans of Middle-earth shouldn't complain of boredom in the next several months. Next year will see the debut of: the stealth game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum and the survival game The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria. Further plans also include the mobile RPG The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth
