New Major Order in Helldivers 2 stirred up quite a controversy. Obvious dev joke doesn't land with everyone

Helldivers don't have it easy, but maybe it's time to say „enough” to each other? It's probably not as easy as it seems, though.

How are the Helldivers, mate? Democracy holding strong? It’s not all bad, but our heroes clearly lack perspective - enough to take the latest Order as proof of the devs’ incompetence.

Arrowhead Game Studios has given them a clear objective: wipe out 2.5 million Automaton Troopers. In less then a week. Some players’ brains are already overheating, trying to figure out how to wipe out that many enemies in such a short time - especially with a stratagem that takes three minutes to recharge and only hits one target at full power.

Helldivers is not a second job

Others, however, saw the situation as intentionally absurd, noting that while the number of units left to destroy is massive, they are just common grunts. They’re tiny, barely a threat, and taking them out with an orbital railgun - a weapon that obliterates a single target with ridiculous force - feels like pure overkill.

The absurdity here is hard to miss - it’s clearly a joke on the developers' part. Still, plenty of players aren’t laughing - which makes you think the Helldivers might just be too worn out and overworked to get the joke. So, naturally, the forums were flooded with complaints about the new Order.

It's... guys, it's a joke. It's supposed to be funny. they're making you use a grossly inappropriate weapon for something you're very obviously not supposed to use it for. It's absurdism. It's comedy. It being objectively wrong and stupid is the point. (...) They're making you use a grossly inappropriate weapon for something you're very obviously not supposed to use it for. I saw the objective, laughed, came here [Reddit] expecting to see other people yukking it up... and instead the top-rated post on the subreddit is someone accusing AH of being incompetent idiots and that this must be a typo? Do y'all not have senses of humor?

Meanwhile, another fan stepped in to calm the storm, addressing the frustrated players - already gearing up for another round of developer-bashing - with the following words:

Reminder: its a game. Point is to have fun. Devs put out an unplaytested, poorly thought out thing? Just dont engage with it! Its not your second job!

It seems the defense of Super Earth - and the grind of those endless Major Orders - has already started to take its toll on the Helldivers’ sanity. This is the dark side of digital military service: sure, the soldiers will defend Democracy - but who’s going to protect them from themselves? Well, if things keep going this way, the leadership might have to start organizing support groups for veterans of the digital war.
