UK residents must verify their age to access adult content online. However, the new system can be bypassed using VPN and... images from Death Stranding.
Lately, there have been more and more attempts to control the content we see on the Internet. Recently, a lot of adult games disappeared from Steam, and a little later, the same thing happened to itch.io. Now in the UK, there's a new law that requires age verification on all websites with this type of content. However, users have found ways to bypass it.
The reason for introducing new regulations is to protect children from harmful online content. From July 25, a standard click of the "I am over 18 years old" button is no longer enough in the United Kingdom.
The state body Ofcom requires that websites offer the option to verify the user's age based on one of several methods. This can be, among other things, a photo, video recording, or confirmation from a bank or mobile network operator.
It's worth noting that this applies not only to adult websites, but also to social media and apps. As a result, to view NSFW content on platforms like Reddit, Discord, or X, you also need to verify your age. By the way, users are reporting that X has extended this requirement to the whole of Europe, even though the stricter law only applies (at least for now) in the UK.
It probably goes without saying that many people are very dissatisfied because of this. As a result, people are looking for ways to bypass age verification - and it turns out they are really simple.
Many people are looking into VPN programs that allow them to bypass geographic restrictions. As a result, Proton VPN recorded a 1400 percent increase in logins from the United Kingdom on Friday.
It must be admitted that such a situation was easy to predict. Many people don't want to give out their personal information and prefer to bypass security using such programs. However, VPN is not the only way to skip age verification that users have found.
Discord users found an interesting and kind of funny way around it. It turns out that even though the creators of the age verification system anticipated the possibility of sending photos of older people, they didn't consider the increasing realism in video games.
To prove your age, you need to open and close your mouth to show that you're a real person. One of the users used screenshots from Death Stranding, taken in photo mode. You can see the face of the main character with various expressions on them. In this way, he successfully passed the verification.
This shows how difficult it is to enforce new laws on the Internet. It seems that users always find a way to bypass restrictions.
It's worth also mentioning that a petition has been launched in the UK to repeal the new law. In just six days, over 331,000 people have signed it, showing huge interest in the topic.
