Pharaoh: A New Era Doesn't Reinvent Egypt, But it's a Great City Builder; First Reviews

Yesterday saw the release of a strategy game that takes us back to the time of Ancient Egypt - Pharaoh: A New Era. The first reviews of this city builder are overwhelmingly positive.

Yesterday marked the release of Pharaoh: A New Era, a remake of the 1999 city builder. The first reviews of the game by Triskell Interactive have already appeared online. According to the critics, fans of this type of strategy games got a solid game.

Below are the reviews of Pharaoh: A New Era from selected websites:

Pharaoh: A New Era - selected reviews

  • EIP Gaming - 8/10
  • GameGrin - 9/10
  • Gaming Nexus - 8/10
  • GamePressure - 8,5/10
  • TheGamer - 4/5
  • Shacknews - 8/10
  • The Games Machine - 7.8/10
  • Gameblog - 8/10
  • MetaCritic - 83/100 (10 reviews)
  • OpenCritic 83/100 (11 reviews)

In their reviews, the critics emphasize fidelity to the original and how much detail has been preserved. At the same time, Pharaoh: A New Era is a game of its time, in many respects adapted for modern players.

According to the reviewers, fans of the original will feel right at home, but that home has received a significant overhaul in the form of improved graphics, which even enable us to play in 4K.

Not all aspects are so positive, however. Of the downsides, unreadable gameplay elements, such as some parts of the interface or the lack of a name list when creating a profile, are often cited. According to some critics, the new, more "cartoonish" graphics will not appeal to everyone.

At the end of the day, the consensus among these opinions is that Pharaoh: A New Era is a very good city builder with a competent set of missions that retains the spirit of the original, while introducing much needed modern solutions.

The game can currently be purchased on Steam and GOG.com. These are promotional prices, reduced by 15% to celebrate the release. The offer will remain valid until February 22. More details on Pharaoh: A New Era, including system requirements, can be found here.
