Pokemon Go to introduce Raid Battles and changes to Gym system

Pokemon Go players will soon be able to join forces in multiplayer Raid Battles against huge Raid Bosses. An upcoming update will also feature important changes to Gym system.

A big update is coming to Pokemon Go, introducing raid battles and new gym features. As for the latter, here is an excerpt from a post on the official website:

Starting soon, Gyms are undergoing a major facelift. You’ll soon be able to spin the Photo Disc at Gyms to acquire items just as you do at PokeStops – but that’s only the beginning. More updates to Gym battles are also just around the corner. Gyms are no longer based on Prestige and training. Instead, they now feature six permanent slots that can be filled by the controlling team’s Pokemon. Each Pokemon assigned to these slots must be unique. For example, only one Blissey can be assigned to a Gym at a time. In addition, opposing teams will battle the Pokemon in the order they were assigned to the Gym.

A new motivation system underlies these changes. “Pokemon assigned to defend a Gym lose motivation over time and as they are defeated in battle”, and as they do they also lose CP and may eventually leave the Gym. In order to keep their Pokemon highly-motivated, trainers can feed them Berries, which boost the meter. Besides, players will be receiving Gym Badges and level them up to get bonus items and other rewards.

Pokemon Go trainers will soon be able to team up in order to take down Raid Bosses.

Another novelty in the upcoming update are Raid Battles, each one featuring a Raid Boss, who can only be defeated in cooperation with other trainers – up to 20 of them. In order to participate, you must have a Raid Pass. Players can get one free Raid Pass per day, but may only hold one at the same time; for more, you should head to the in-game shop. Defeating a Raid Boss within a time limit grants you a chance to catch an extra powerful Pokemon. It also earns you a score of new items, including: Rare Candies, Golden Razz Berries, and two types of Technical Machines – Fast and Charged.

An important note from the Pokemon team: before the update rolls out, all Gyms will be temporarily disabled.
